How to optimise your listings for internet search engines
Although internet search engines don’t disclose exactly how their technology works or how they rank their results, if you follow some good listing practices combined with these tips, you’ll be in a good position to help search engines find you and help boost your enquiries.
Ask yourself what words people are likely to use in a search engine when looking for what you’re selling. Pick 3 to 5 of these keywords and use them appropriately in your listing title and business description.
Take care with your title
Your listing title is a key factor in search results. Include the most important keywords or keyword phrases in your listing title. Use all of your available characters wisely. Remember, users don’t search for words such as ‘wow’ or ‘look’. Consider using words such as house removal, man and van and a location.
Get the most out of your business description
Your business description is the most valuable tool for creating search engine-friendly listings. While your main aim is to describe your business and why prospective customers should call you.
Create good content: Describe your business the best you can and in as much detail as possible. You should include approximately 200 words of visible text in your description, with the most important keyword phrases comprising 5 to 7% of the total. (In 200 words of text, you’ll want to use your keywords 10 to 14 times.)
Note: Search engines only read a certain amount of information per page, so overdoing your description with non-relevant information isn’t a good strategy.
Avoid keyword spamming: Don’t overuse keywords in an item description as it can reduce the effectiveness of content. Also, keyword spamming is not going to encourage customers to call you.
Pictures – Pictures are very important, use your own pictures and don’t be tempted to use images taken from the internet. Take some photos of your vehicle and maybe some photos of a job you’ve worked on. People buy from other people and they’ll want to see the “ face “ of your business not a stock image.
